“Takoma Academy (TA) was established in the early 1900s to meet the educational needs of church members in the Washington, D.C. area,” says Carla Thrower, principal at TA in Takoma Park, Md. “It exists to produce contributing, dedicated church members prepared to live as Christian citizens in today’s society, as well as in the new earth to come. As with anything of value, cost is always a concern. We seek to make this opportunity affordable to all families, and thus, we offer several ways of assisting with funding.”
These opportunities include:
- Neighboring church support
- Bainum Foundation Scholarships
- State of Maryland BOOST voucher
- Southern Adventist University (ASSIST) Scholarship
- Takoma Academy Scholarship
- Potomac Conference Subsidy
Beyond these opportunities, Takoma Academy’s labor of love is their Worthy Student Fund (WSF), established to cover unplanned emergencies that occur throughout the course of the school year. Often these crisises prevent students from matriculating through their course of study. “While students can apply for funds from the Takoma Academy Scholarship, the WSF is insurance for Murphy’s Law,” says Thrower.
On average, financial limitations prevent some 15 students per year from enrolling in or completing their studies at TA. The WSF directly assists about 25 students per year.
When Full Circle Ministries, a personal ministry of Paul Graham, senior pastor of Restoration Praise Center in Bowie, Md., became aware of the financial hardships students face, he decided to donate proceeds from the ministry’s next event to the WSF. Christian a cappella gospel group, Take 6, will be performing in the J.P. Laurence Auditorium, on TA’s campus, Oct. 21. General admission is $35. Doors open at 7:15pm.
