“Fear Factor” night culminated the Piney Forest church’s (Danville, Va.) Healthy Eating Supper Club series last month. The menu was a “classified secret” and featured “healthaphobic” foods like tofu, avocado mashed potatoes, lentil barbeque, brussel sprouts and healthy cookies.
The club started last year in an effort to introduce healthier food choices and bring a positive presence to the community. In order to attend, members needed to bring a vegetarian dish and a friend or neighbor. This year, the club met every Wednesday night in September. Members will continue this positive outreach by hosting the club the first Wednesday of every month.
Members said each supper received enthusiastic comments and several participants have already been enjoying the recipes at home. The suppers drew more than 30 participants, including 20 friends and neighbors.
One of last year’s participants said, “I was hoping you would do another supper club this year. Last year I brought my 13-year-old daughter with me and she decided to become a vegetarian. I can’t wait to bring her again and get some new recipe ideas.”
Additionally, the church will be hosting a 5-K Run/Picnic at the end of October to highlight another aspect of better health. Both events are part of a year-long community awareness effort culminating in a spring evangelistic outreach.
