The Potomac Conference announced its plan to re-launch women’s ministries at conference level during two Camp Meeting prayer breakfasts with almost 200 women in attendance.

“This ministry has the goal of empowering the women of Potomac to be disciples of Jesus,” said Sharon Cress, pastoral ministries associate for discipleship. “And to nurture within our congregations and communities by sharing the message of Good News.”

The vision is to encourage and train women to be involved with community entities like abuse and domestic violence shelters, aiding unemployed women, high school mothers and young girls. “We want this to be an opportunity for women to mentor within their community,” said Cress. “Everything we do ought to involve the public. I don’t want to see us plan events just for entertainment within our Adventist groups, but I want to see us inviting others and fellowshipping.”

Special guest, Carla Baker, Women’s Ministries coordinator for the North American Division, spoke at the re-launching event and shared resources and opportunities for involvement across the nation.

Cress, who was the associate ministerial secretary for the General Conference for 18 years and director of shepherdess international, is planning a 2013 women’s convention to prepare for the NAD’s convention in 2014. Almost every attendee signed up to receive a women’s newsletter sent out by the NAD and to receive notifications for training events Potomac will be planning before the end of this year.

“We’d like to give a special thanks to President Bill Miller and John Cress, director of pastoral ministries, for their vision of empowering women to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Cress. “We’d also like to thank Nancy Melashanko, associate superintendent for education, and Jenny Spangenberg with all their help in planning and implementing this event and we’d like to salute the women ministries groups that have already been effectively ministering their communities.”
